How Can Ordinary People Find Their Own Ways to Make Money?

Can someone without capital, connections, distribution channels or industry experience still find ways to earn money? Yes. The key lies in one word: leverage—using resources that others possess.

Borrowing capital, channels, technology, brands and emerging trends: the book approaches these possibilities through a connected methodology. It begins with a change in mindset, continues through understanding people and choosing a direction, then examines the methods for integrating resources and selecting commercial pathways. Finally, it explains how to operate within the safeguards of legal compliance and protection of rights. Together, these elements form a practical, learnable and repeatable approach for everyday readers.

It is not a book promising overnight wealth. Instead, it offers a practical operating system for making money that readers can use again and again.

About the Author

Zhu Zhiming completed postgraduate studies at Fudan University in 1987 and later taught at East China University of Political Science and Law. He began practising as a lawyer in 1990 and has worked in commercial legal services for more than thirty years.

His practice focuses on commercial structure design, mergers and acquisitions, contract drafting and review, corporate governance, compliance and risk management. He has long participated in business operations, commercial collaborations and corporate governance projects.

Zhu has been recommended by internationally recognised legal directories, including The Asia Pacific Legal 500. The publication stated:

“Zhu Zhiming is a very good choice, according to clients.”

He has also been recognised by Global Law Experts as an expert in Chinese corporate law.

Leverage is a systematic presentation of lessons gained from his years of professional experience. Its treatment of commercial thinking, resource integration, business operations and risk boundaries is closely connected to the author’s work in commercial legal services and corporate advisory practice.

The book grew out of sustained frontline experience and the process of bringing scattered observations, reflections and practical lessons together into a coherent methodology.

Excerpt from the Book

The following passage is reproduced from Chapter Four, “Methods: The Principles and Techniques of Resource Integration.”

Professional tax and accounting advisory teams: They possess technical capabilities but lack a steady stream of clients.

Software platforms serving small and medium-sized businesses: They have many customers but lack the capacity to provide in-depth consulting services and are unable to convert their traffic into additional revenue.

Business customers: They need basic bookkeeping tools as well as specialist compliance advice.

Under the conventional approach, advisers pay for their own marketing, while software platforms build their own advisory teams. Each spends money developing activities outside its core competence, producing poor efficiency.

[Applying Co-Creation Thinking]

A professional whom we will call Mr Wang recognised an opportunity and took the following steps.

He brought together several professional advisory teams and software platforms and proposed a collaborative arrangement.

To the software platforms, he explained: “Your customers need compliance advice. We can supply the professional expertise. You do not need to establish your own consulting teams. For every completed engagement, you receive an agreed share of the revenue.”

To the advisory teams, he explained: “You have the expertise but not enough clients. The platforms can generate precisely matched customer demand. You concentrate on delivering the service and receive revenue according to the agreed allocation.”

Mr Wang also designed a lightweight corporate-compliance self-assessment tool, offered free to users of the software platforms. Customers could use the tool to identify potential compliance issues and then decide whether to purchase more extensive consulting services.

The result was that the software platforms earned income from additional services, advisory teams obtained a steady flow of customers and businesses addressed their compliance needs. Mr Wang, as the designer of the arrangement, also received an appropriate return from the overall collaboration while safeguarding the interests of the participants.

[Case Lesson]

The essence of co-creation is not to complete every step using one’s own resources. It is to bring together the resources of different participants and design reasonable arrangements through which everyone can benefit.
